checkesnfree shows clear but Sprint insists it isn't

Well, hardly a paperweight.

You could find several individuals interested in it for Boost Mobile (illegal ESN mods), or Cricket, MetroPCS, etc.

Unfortunately, that's how it works.

That of course assumes that Sprint or Asurion will release the ESN and that whoever the person I theoretically would sell it to would be able to get someone from Sprint that might have a clue and could activate the phone for them. I couldn't in good conscious sell it to anyone without giving them the full story and knowing what to expect.

Sell it to anyone you want as a phone that can't be activated on Sprint.

Tell them it MUST be used on Cricket, or MetroPCS, or could be "illegally flashed" to Boost Mobile.

Sprint/Asurion doesn't have to do anything for you to let someone else flash it to another carrier, as those other carriers don't use Sprint's database, except for Boost and whoever on Boost had it would change the ESN anyway.
