Verizon 8 character ESNs

Had a question and seeing if any one knows the answer. Why is the older ESNs for Verizon the 8 character ones only allowed to be activated on the Verizon pre-paid network. I have a ton of old Verizon phones that I would like to sell but they cant be activated on standard contract plans. If any one has any information regarding this I would very grateful.
Thank you

It is likely they are only prepaid devices, and according to Verizon, can't be used on postpaid plans until after they've been used on prepaid for no less than 6 months.

That's rather bizarre. Can you PM me some of the ESNs as well as their make/model?

I checked this ESN "84AA860D" (GzOne Type-V) and it comes back showing eligible for use on postpaid and prepaid.
